Various Artists Los Cocorocos December 2006
This has got to be perhaps one of the best salsa and urban compilations released so far. Los Cocorocos is a compilation CD made up of various tropical and urban Latino artists such as well-known salseros Gilberto Santa Rosa, Domingo Quiñones, and Victor Manuelle, along with popular urban artists Don Omar, Tego Claderon, Mafo Crew, Voltio, and more. The first single titled “Los Hombres Tienen La Culpa” interpreted by master salsero Gilberto Santa Rosa and bad-ass reggaetonero, Don Omar, has been dominating tropical music charts everywhere with its mix of strong vocals and instrumental. Hip-hop artists and rappers often give the impression that they wouldn’t be able to hold a note if their life depended on it. Rarely do we hear a reggaetonero navigate beyond his/her comfort zone, but on this song Don Omar proves that he has more vocal talent up his sleeve than his music style usually demonstrates. Other hit-potential tracks are “Mal Agüero” by La Sister and Domingo Quiñones-a hype reggaetón with male-bashing lyrics, and a personal favorite is “La Wasa” by La Symphonia, a neo-son montuno that delivers the sweet, hip-swaying beat of a son-montuno with a modern rap flavor.
