Juanes / Mi Sangre
(Universal/Surco)

by Ramiro Burr

On his third outing, Colombian singer/songwriter Juanes doesn’t deviate from his winning formula: the fusion of vallenato dance rhythms with melodic rock rhythms. But as astute fans know, it hardly matters. Juanes is an expert at beautifully melding divergent musical styles into a coherent whole. Elegant acoustic guitars and cellos fuel “Para Tu Amor,” the lovely ballad on declaring endless devotion, and the Beatlesque “No Siento Penas,” on being drunk in love. His rock party tunes also connect solidly. Driving percussions and guitars spark the contagious energy of “Lo que Me Gusta a Mi,” and “La Camisa Negra,” which sounds a lot like his previous hits “La Paga,” from his Un Dia Normal CD because they both use the same guitar and percussive rhythms. As long as Juanes can keep cooking up these delicious rhythmic blends, he’ll remain on the cutting edge of Colombian rock.
