Negroni's Trio / Naturaleza - Nature
(Universal Latino) by P. L. Ehioze Idahosa José Negroni’s CV (Curriculum Vitae) comes with notable credits and accomplishments. A native Puerto Rican, he has been accompanist to many of the best Puerto Rican and Miami-based musicians and singers over the last decade. Additionally, he played roles in the musical formation of others as an A&R rep. So, it was with some anticipation that I listened to his first solo trio album, “Naturaleza/Nature”. The results, unfortunately, are disappointing. At barely 35 minutes long, part of the problem lies in the album trying to cover too much territory in such a small time. In attempting to play jazz, pop, and new age music, the CD lacks musical cohesion. Many ideas are not allowed to develop, and lack the interesting modulations and imaginative improvisatory verve of some of the more interesting solo efforts by Latin pianists. The truth is that if Negroni’s better tracks begin promisingly and develop and end disappointingly, it is in because he cannot really improvise that well. Even the seductive vamping hypnotism of much Latin piano playing is absent, while his attempt at some montuno on “Isla” stumbles over an inability to sustain a groove. Those wishing to get a recent sense of the range of possibilities of Latin piano would be better off beginning with Negroni’s brilliant countrymen, Edsel Gomez. |
