Various / Dirty Dancing, Havana Nights.
(J Records)

by Mariela Pérez-Simons

Mostly a blend of hip-hop with Latin and Afro-Cuban rhythms, this catchy soundtrack is getting better reviews than the movie itself. Hiphop lovers will love highly energetic tracks such as: Yerba Buena’s "Guajira (I Love U 2 Much)," Black Eyed Peas’s "Dirty Dancing," Santana /Jorge Moreno’s "Satellite," and, of course, Orishas’s "Represent, Cuba." With 12 spicy tracks, this album also features songs by: Christina Aguilera (“El Beso del Final,”) Mya ("Do You Only Wanna Dance,") and Aterciopelados (“El Estuche”). While the younger generation will love the contemporary flavor of this CD, those looking for a more traditional Cuban sound will be disappointed. But most everyone who hears it keeps asking the same questions- isn’t this movie set 1958 Cuba? Where is all the hiphop coming from? Why are most of the singers American? Go figure.
