Victor Manuelle/ Travesía
(Sony Discos)
by Mariela Pérez-Simons

Salsero Victor Manuelle allows himself the luxury to be Travieso in Travesía, shifting his approach slightly but maintaining the essence of his style. The product of this playfulness is the mixing of diverse old-school sounds with modern pop beats done with such skill, that it’s unnoticeable, as if he has done it throughout his long career. The salsa version of the first promotional single, “Tengo Ganas,” which was co-written by Manuelle and Estefan Jr, is probably the track that most resembles Victor’s previous albums—the powerful trumpets, abundance of percussion, and the sonero’s voice.
The spice comes via Carlos Vives in “Yo te Daré,” loaded with sensual sounds like reggae, pop, and ballenato. But it’s songs like “¿Pero Quién?”—a sabroso son montuno with those claves going “Tum...tum...tum…tum-tum / Tum...tum...tum…tum-tum”—that make our heartbeat rise. Though the mixing of genres is intense, Travesía is not only digestible but also enticing and enjoyable. |
