Willy Chirino / Son del Album
(Latinum Music/Sony Discos)
by Mariela Pérez-Simons

Next to Gloria Estefan,Willy Chirino is the most recognized Cuban-music voice in the United States. He’s also a pioneer of the “Miami Sound,” a rhythm that includes elements of dance, jazz, pop, rock, and Cuban son. On this album, Chirino continues along that line and makes a kind of tropical pop that — marked with a chispa cubana — is hard to resist. Although mainly a salsa recording, Son del Alma also includes one merengue, and a slow ballad entitled “Unidos,” a hymn to unification. The güiro and clave have never sounded this good. Don’t miss “Hechizo de Luna,” “El Diablo Llegó a la Habana,” and the bonus track, “Allá se Quedó,” a duet with Johnny Ventura. |
